I wrote this because my brain told me to

hot linked image to WSJApparently we don’t consciously make decisions, but in fact our decisions are made for us by our unconsciousnesses before we’re even aware.

From the article, Get Out of Your Own Way, it seems some researches have discovered that through monitoring the automatic responses of our neurochemistry, they can predict our intentions or attitudes towards given information or situations.

I find this a frightening notion. Does this not scream “Thought Police!” to you? Can you imagine being stopped by Authorities for some reason and all they have to do is yell questions at you, then read a scanner for the ‘answers”? I realize that’s a stretch but really, if *I* had this thought, for damn sure those who WOULD do such a thing are stroking their goats right now.

But really, what bothers me is the implication that I (EGO) am not actually free thinking my way through life; rather, my actions are based on decisions that are triggered by the brains response to past experience, to protect or gain advantage, and THEN I get to ‘think’ about it. How dare my ID?

oh wait, this isn’t a new idea at all. Freud would be smiling and stroking his goat right now.
